Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Urban sanitation is essential for public health and environmental sustainability. In Jalingo Local Government Area (LGA), Taraba State, rapid urbanization has led to challenges such as poor waste management and inadequate sanitation infrastructure. Public relations (PR) plays a critical role in raising awareness about sanitation practices and mobilizing community action. As noted by Johnson and Adebayo (2024), PR campaigns that incorporate community engagement, social media outreach, and strategic messaging can significantly improve urban sanitation outcomes. This study explores the role of PR in urban sanitation awareness campaigns in Jalingo LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to improve urban sanitation in Jalingo LGA, challenges such as low public awareness, resistance to change, and inadequate infrastructure persist. PR strategies can address these issues, but their effectiveness in promoting urban sanitation awareness in Jalingo LGA has not been fully examined.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of PR in urban sanitation awareness campaigns in Jalingo LGA.
  2. To identify challenges faced by PR practitioners in promoting urban sanitation.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing PR campaigns for urban sanitation awareness in Jalingo LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does PR contribute to urban sanitation awareness in Jalingo LGA?
  2. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of PR campaigns in promoting urban sanitation?
  3. What strategies can improve PR efforts in urban sanitation awareness campaigns in Jalingo LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. PR campaigns significantly increase public awareness of urban sanitation in Jalingo LGA.
  2. Challenges such as limited resources and public apathy hinder the effectiveness of PR campaigns.
  3. Enhanced PR strategies can improve urban sanitation awareness in Jalingo LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study highlights the importance of PR in promoting urban sanitation and provides actionable insights for policymakers, PR practitioners, and environmental agencies to improve sanitation practices in Jalingo LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on PR strategies for urban sanitation awareness campaigns in Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, exploring their effectiveness, challenges, and impact.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
